FACE TO FACE WITH TYLER JACOB

Tyler Jacob

Covering tracks like Adele’s “Someone Like You” and Beyonce’s “1+1”, 22-year-old R&B newcomer Tyler Jacob has captured the eyes and ears of over half a million YouTube viewers and received the ‘stamp of approval’ from music industry peers including Melanie Fiona, Claude Kelly, and Donell Jones, just to name a few. But beyond his striking looks and stellar vocals which have captivated audiences from his hometown of Camden, NJ to Hollywood, CA—it is Jacob’s humility and charming disposition that make him a star.

We had the opportunity to share a few laughs with the currently unsigned singer-songwriter and discuss some of his goals and future ambitions. Aside from performing, circulating his extremely successful single, “Face II Face” and numerous YouTube covers, Jacob has been nurturing his artistry and expanding his fan base.

“I have so much music recorded and I just haven’t found a collection of songs to put together to release an album. I haven’t felt comfortable yet with the music I have recorded. So right now my main focus is building my brand so that means more YouTube videos and maybe a video for my “Face II Face” single…traveling the states and getting my name out there…

Leaving an imprint with each and every dynamic live stage performance, Jacob has been able to generate quite a buzz—being spotlighted for his diverse vocal and songwriting abilities. During our chat with Jacob, we got the chance to hear a very impressive live sample from the R&B crooner. Apart from the fact that he sang for us on the spot, we were floored by his soulful, passionate sound. His sound and ability to captivate his audience can be attributed to Jacob’s genuine connection to his music. “I think when it comes to the music I put so much emotion into it that it kind of exudes through my vocals…I feel every song that I write so when I’m on stage and I’m singing it people can feel it too and think that’s what makes me different,” Jacob expressed. “Sometimes you look at an artist on stage and you don’t really feel the music that they’re singing because either somebody wrote it for them or they’re not able to connect to those songs and they aren’t really thinking about what it means to them…” Besides personal life lessons and an avid love for music, Jacob also pulls a lot of his inspiration and sound from artists like Brandy, Raheem Devaughn, Tank, Adele, Prince, Musiq, and Luther Vandross to name a few.

Earning respect from major music outlets as R&B’s next sensation, the question of the hour has been which record label Mr. Jacob will sign to. And while most rising artist dream of making it big by getting signed to a major record label, Jacob values the freedom of discovery and expression that comes from being an unsigned artist. Although major labels have approached him, Jacob explains, “If I could do it independently, that’s my dream. I would rather be able to make it on my own without having a major label behind me. One, because labels kind of force you into being somebody that you’re not if you don’t come to them prepared and ready, which is why I have a team behind me who is always making sure that I am getting to know myself more and more every day.”

As an independent artist, Jacob hasn’t done too badly for himself—already hitting the stage of the legendary BB Kings and The Village Underground in NYC, capturing and retaining an impressively growing fan base, and releasing two noteworthy hit singles including “Cry No More” and “Face II Face”. However, Jacob admitted that while being independent has its perks, the grind of an unsigned artist isn’t an easy one. But amidst his very demanding schedule, Jacob still finds time to sneak in word search puzzles, sketch concert arenas, daydream about his own clothing line, and most importantly, to laugh. “I’m goofy and I love to laugh. If they [my fans] want to know who I really am…I’m always laughing,” he said following a light-hearted, infectious laugh.
